Lucky Craft® Rick Clunn Signature Pro Wake Action Crankbait
Target Species: Largemouth Bass
Also
Good For: Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike
Lucky Craft crankbaits are a luxury we should all treat ourselves to once in a while. Precisely tuned, sharply detailed, and painted in an eye-catching array of colors the Rick Clunn Signature Pro Series is perhaps one of the best squat body crankbaits in existence today. The Wake Action model is no exception and is designed to attack top water.
First Impressions
We reviewed this lure's cousin, the Lucky Craft Rick Clunn 1.5 in the past and were suitably impressed. Our only hesitation was the cost at $15.99 MSRP. This model is similarly priced. However, unlike the rest of the series this lure also features a segmented body and a feathered rear treble. The 5/8 oz. Chartreuse Perch we reviewed is a big lure and clearly designed to catch big fish.
Fishing the Lure
The Rick Clunn Wake Action is designed to float and work the surface. Like most quality crankbaits, the body is balanced and casts well. Being buoyant and somewhat squat-like in stature, the Wake Action can be a little more challenging to cast into a brisk wind, however this is usually not a concern.
What continues to amaze me about Lucky Craft lures are the depth of color and flash they produce in real conditions. In hand the paint looks sharp, but once in the water the flash is exceptional.
In the case of the Wake Action, flash is intensified even more so since the lure sits on the surface. The segmented body creates both a side-to-side wobble, as well as a controlled partial roll. This signature action creates a unique trailing wake no other surface bait can simulate. Of course, the best technique is to slowly retrieve the lure through and around structure calling bass in all directions.
Review Summary
The Rick Clunn Wake Action by Lucky Craft is an exceptional lure. When price is not a factor, it outshines most of it's peers. There is no doubt the quality and development that went into this lure is of high standard, but so is the price.
Overall we rate it 75 and that score would be higher if it were cheaper. If you have the money and enough experience to avoid snags, by all means we recommend adding a few to your arsenal. However, if you are starting out, $16 can be a steep price when you can get 2-3 quality lures for the same cost. Speaking from experience, it's a lot less frustrating when you lose them.
