Luck-"E" Strike® USA Scrounger Jig

Target Species: Trout
Also Good For: Smallmouth Bass, Sunfishes, Crappie

Recently, Luck-E Strike USA re-introduced a billed-design jighead which offers the versatility of a jighead with the added swimming action of a crankbait. Armed with a Gamakatsu hook and clear bill, we were anxious to give it a try.

First Impressions

Such a simple design and concept, it's no wonder its been used for over 35 years. Swim jigs have been on the market for a number of years, but few if any with a crankbait-like bill. In hand they seem a bit awkward and top heavy. But as with any new lure I experiment, I try to pass judgment until I actually use.

Fishing the Jig

The beauty of a jig head is its versatility. It may be tipped with any number of color or scent combinations to match the conditions you are fishing. The Scrounger jig offers this same unsurpassed flexibility with a pliable plastic bill offering horizontal swimming action and vibration in addition to the normal vertical jig motion.

Arm this jig in 3/8 oz. with a thin skirt and Berkley Minnow Grub in complementary colors and look out!

Even at smaller sizes this jig excels. I personally prefer the 3/16 oz. for panfish and trout species. Jigged softly with a combination of slow retrieve seems to gather the attention of Rainbow Trout and during the summer spawn, it drives panfish nuts!

Review Summary

The Scrounger from Luck-E Strike USA offers a presentation on a simple concept that is effective and most importantly relatively cheap! The bill itself is made of a pliable plastic which can be carefully trimmed for experimenting adding versatility points and although unpainted, can be tipped with virtually any color bait on earth. We really like this jig and rate it Outstanding (Score: 82) as it offers a new, cost-effective option for an age old technique.
