Here's a nice video from the Thunder Mist Lure Co. proving that you don't need a boat or even a dock for landing trophy-sized Rainbow trout.

Essential Gear Items For Shore Angling

10 Essential Items that you must have

A solid spin-casting rod reel combo

My current favorite is a Bass Pro Shops 45 Modulus Rod (Medium Action / 6') with a Shimano Reel (Bass Pro Shops: $119.00). For a lower budget, Shakespeare makes dependable starter set-up combos beginning for as little as $30 or so.

Fishing license

Abiding by and understanding the local fishing laws and regulations help us all. In most cases, these rules and restrictions are in place to help build the fish population.

A good travel/tackle box

I praise the Plano 4600 StowAway (review). This box is lightweight, two-tiered and is only about the size of a medium sized book, yet can hold a day's full worth of lures and tackle.

Proper footwear, waders or boots

You'll need a good pair of comfortable hiking shoes or boots that are not only lightweight, but preferably water-proof as well.

Sunglasses with side lenses or shields

You can get a good pair of polarized sunglasses for as little as $15. In addition to shading your eyes from the sun, polarized lenses create a unique contrast that allows you to see into the depths of the water better. Side shields help eliminate glare and most importantly, they will act as safety glasses in case a largemouth decides to spit your spinner back in your face as you try to set the hook

Needle nose pliers and a knife

A set of thin pliers or other pincher type device for removing hooks cleanly is a must. Rapala makes a nice combo set that sits within a holster and clips to your pocket or belt for easy access.

Small flashlight and hand towel

Believe it or not, you can fit both in the Plano 4700. You may not find yourself using these items often, but having them accessible will definitely be appreciated if needed.

Sun Protection

Use a high SPF lotion, screen, lip balm or whatever else it takes. Remember that the water acts like a mirror and is reflecting those rays right back up at you so you end up getting zapped twice. A good ball cap doesn't hurt as well to protect the head.

Mosquito or bug repellent

I hate using this stuff for a variety of reasons, but it beats being swarmed. Otherwise, if weather conditions permit, wear long sleeved clothing.

What about tackle?!

A true angler can catch a fish on a bare hook! But, you'll want to try something a little more productive, so click here to read our reviews and decide what to fill you tackle box with.
